Megatherium americanum
Donor: George Nelson
Place Object Found: Buenos Aires
Department: Earth Sciences
Accession Number: H8.6.76.29
Giant ground sloths, or Megatherium, lived in South America up to the end of the last Ice Age, around 11,000 years ago. This is a specimen of a fragment of one of the animal's ribs. A full-sized Megatherium was the size of an elephant. The animals's extinction coincided with the arrival of Humans in South America, and its thought that a combination of climate change and human hunting wiped them out.
