In 1967, Arthur Pill excavated several of the caves at Hartle Dale in Derbyshire. He uncovered hundreds of specimens of the fragmentary remains of many species of animal, meticulously recording the exact position of each fragment. The dating of the specimens is uncertain, although as many of the species are domestic (horses, sheep and cattle), they are likely to be relatively recent in geological terms - no more than a few thousand years old.
