This algae was preserved by Dr. Henry Clifton Sorby who developed an unusual method for preserving specimens as lantern slides. The method allowed Sorby to project accurate, colour depictions of plant and animal life for his lectures. The only other way to do this would be to commission hand-drawn and coloured plates, which would have been prohibitively expensive.
