This specimen is part of a folio of pressed seaweeds collated by Margaret Gatty and her daughter, Horatia. Almost all of the contents of the folio were collected between 1850 to 1864. It is particularly interesting that this specimen is from New Zealand. The name Colenso is written underneath the place of collection. This is presumably William Colenso, a botanist living in New Zealand during the 19th century. How the Gattys came to have this unidentified specimen is unknown.
