Testudo graeca
Common Name: Mediterranean Spur-thighed Tortoise
Department: Natural History
Accession Number: 2003.31
Weston Park Museum still commissions and collects taxidermy, but today, we never use any animal that was killed deliberately. This specimen of European tortoise was named Dog. He was the beloved pet of a local couple, who gave him to a taxidermist after he died. Although some people don't like taxidermy, it is still the most accurate way of portraying an animal in a display.
