This specimen is part of a folio of pressed seaweeds collated by Margaret Gatty and her daughter, Horatia. Almost all of the contents of the folio were collected between 1850 to 1864. The Gatty's are known to have travelled to this part of Scotland in 1852, when this specimen was found. It was almost certainly collected by Margaret personally. The specimen is annotated saying that the specimen is very rare. Presumably, a local naturalist (probably Dr David Landsborough who lived nearby) would have told her this.
