Thomas Douglas Fearnehough (1911 - 1983) was particularly interested in aberrations (unusual forms) of British butterflies and described a number of these in the scientific literature. As well as pinning specimens of moth and butterfly, Fearnehough painted them in exquisite detail. These paintings occupy two bound volumes and each of the 114 pages shows one, two or three Swallowtail (Papilio) butterflies, painted in acrylic/gouache on graph paper. The paintings are not only beautiful, but also provide an excellent reference source for identification of Papilios of the world. Each image is referenced with details from whose collection the specimen derived.
