Wire Mill Dam is one of several dams along the River Porter, and today is a popular angling spot for local fishermen The dam was built by Thomas Boulsover in 1761 to power his forge and rolling mill. A memorial on the path today marks the site of his workshops. Boulsover is known for inventing Old Sheffield Plate, an innovative method of firing a thin layer of silver onto copper. In the 1860s the mill became a wire mill and this is the name by which it is still known.
