This slate is part of a collection of items in the Social History collection relating to education in Sheffield. It was made by Sidney Joel for his daughter Marjory, probably in the 1930s.
Marjory’s name and the numbers 1-10 have been burnt onto the wooden edges of the slate. Slates and a slate pencil or chalk were used by children at school instead of pen and paper, as they could be reused over and over again.
