This card is for the Sheffield Skating Club. The team also played cricket during the summer. These two pastimes were combined in 1848 when the club played a cricket match on the ice at the Swiss Cottage Pond, Chatsworth House. Between the innings there was a short interval when the team ‘partook of an excellent lunch, and afterwards some beautiful figure-skating took place’! The president of the club in 1850, John Tasker of Division Street, became famous in Sheffield as a pioneer in telecommunications and generating electricity.
