The artist based this image of the Lyceum Theatre on a memory from childhood. She was aged 13 in 1932 and was painting scenery for amateur shows with a great ambition to become a professional fine artist.
The Christmas pantomime that year was a production of Dick Whittington. It was described by an enthusiastic reviewer as ‘a wonderful show, full of gaiety, laughter, and beauty’ (Sheffield Telegraph, 28th December 1932). In keeping with tradition the lead role was played by a female actor called Nancy Fraser.
