These boots were found in a chimney breast on Donnington Road, with a copy of The Star newspaper dated 7 September 1895 stuffed inside. Traditionally shoes were used as charms in the home. Shoes were thought to ward off evil spirits or prevent witches from getting into the house, if they were placed where they could get in the home easily. These were most commonly in the chimney or fireplace, in the roof, around doors and windows, and under the floor.
