Joyce Spurr’s painting captures a view of the Hobson Houghton Co. Ltd and Don Steel Works from across the River Don. In the foreground is Walk Mill Weir, which is still there today. The steel industry was fundamental to Sheffield’s economy, but suffered a serious decline in the 1980s. Hobson Houghton Co. Ltd represents one of the many steel works that have since disappeared along the river. The site is now occupied by a Vauxhall car dealership and a car park.
