This section of tree trunk is a souvenir kept by Joyce Udall (nee Smith) from her time in the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War. It has been signed by the other women she worked with at Bitholmes Wood, which is between Wharncliffe Side and Deepcar. Joyce was called up for war service in 1942. Her mother thought she would meet fewer unsuitable men if she was a Land Girl, so Joyce joined the Women’s Land Army and was assigned to the Women’s Timber Corps.
