This sampler was embroidered by Annie Maria Pugh when she was 10 years old. She attended the local school in Attercliffe, where she made this sampler in 1882. Embroidery was considered an important part of a girl's education and girls like Annie would have been encouraged to make samplers to practise the sewing techniques that they were taught at school and at home. On this sampler, Annie has used royal and peacock blue wool to embroider the words 'ANNIE PUGH, Aged X, ATTERCLIFFE BOARD SCHOOL'. She has also decorated the sampler with a herringbone and blanket stitch border and two cross designs. It is possible to see where Annie originally embroidered the date 1882 between the two crosses, although this has since been unpicked.
