This keg for gingerette (a drink) is from from the Herbalist Shop at 250 Gleadless Road. The shop was opened around 1920 by Mr John William Allen, and stayed in business under several different owners until 1984. Over the years the shop was known as the Drink Shop, the Vimto Shop, or Greathead’s. It sold drinks like lime juice, sarsaparilla and Oxo. The Temperance movement encouraged people to stop drinking alcohol, and drinks shops like this one provided an alternative for adults and a choice for children.
