Department: Social History
Accession Number: 1984.4
A honeysuckle border decorates the edges of this sampler, embroidered by Betty Waters. The sampler is dated to 1800, however the colour of the stitiching and the positioning of the date suggest that this may have been a later addition to the sampler. At the top of the sampler Betty has embroidered the first verse from the hymn 'As on the cross the Saviour hung', written by the Baptist minister Samuel Stennett in the late-eighteenth century. Betty has decorated the sampler with images of the crucifixion and the Tree of Knowledge, as well as other popular motifs such as flowers, birds and animals.
