Ann Fish embroidered completed this sampler in 1855. The intricate floral border which decorates the edges of the sampler is typical of nineteenth-century samplers. Religious themes also became more common during this period. In this sampler, Ann has embroidered the words 'GOD said in the day that thou eatest
thereof thou shalt surely die', taken from Genesis 2:17. The central design shows Adam and Eve standing beneath the Tree of Knowledge. This was a popular subject for sampler-makers, who drew inspiration from the illustrated Bible stories that became popular after the advent of Methodism in the mid-eighteenth century.
