Wardsend Arches is popularly known as the Five Arches. It was constructed to carry the Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, opened in 1845, over the Scraith Wood ravine. Herries Road was constructed in the ravine in the 1920s and the viaduct now spans this road near Hillsborough Football Ground.
