Ellen Shearstone embroidered this sampler aged 10 years old, whilst attending the Surrey Street Day School in Sheffield. The sampler is typical of 19th century samplers and is divided into distinct lines, separated by various patterned borders. Ellen has embroidered the alphabet and numbers, followed by a bible verse taken from John 10:11. The verse reads: 'I am the good shepherd'. Ellen has used brightly coloured threads on a cream canvas with a dark red border. It has been lined on the reverse with a hessian material.
