This sampler was embroidered by Hannah Godber in 1841 when she was 11 years old. In the centre of the sampler she has embroidered a large white house. Two sheep are grazing on the grass in front of the house and a shepherd and shepherdess are watching over them. Hannah has decorated the empty space around the house with designs that were popular on nineteenth-century samplers, such as fruit baskets and flowers.
The embroidered verse reads: “How can I most my Gratitude declare, How speak my thanks for all my Parents care, I'll learn while young and when Grown up will be, As kind to you as you are now to me, Hannah Godbers Work Aged eleven Years 1841.”
