William Cowen’s view of Sheffield shows the town centre from the south-east across the River Sheaf valley. You can see details of many of the buildings and streets, and church spires dot the skyline. Shrewsbury Road, in the foreground, was constructed around 1830 and was still largely undeveloped at this time. In the distance to the left are the hills of Crookes and Walkley. The highest hill on the right is Shirecliffe, with Pitsmoor village in front of it.
