The sampler has been embroidered using cross stitch in brown thread on cream linen. It has been edged with a narrow border in fawn and brown. In the centre of the piece is a poem, in which two parents lament the death of their young son. The text at the top of the sampler reads: 'IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE/ OF CHARLES/ THE BELOVED SON OF ALFRED AND MARYANN ROEBUCK/ WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE AUGUST 10TH 1860/ AGED TEN YEARS AND THREE MONTHS'.
