This sheet of paper is the equivalent of a modern race card, with a list of the horses running and space to write in the results. The racecourse at Crookesmoor is the earliest known track in Sheffield and was established in the early 1700s. It was on common land with a grandstand built by public subscription. The races were held annually but seem to have varied in popularity. The last race was held in 1781, two years after the Ecclesall Enclosure Act which led to the common land being divided up and passed into private hands.
