This sampler was made by Mary Ann Godber when she was 12 years old. The verse embroidered at the top of the sampler reads: 'JESUS permit thy Gracious Name to stand, As the first efforts of a females hand, And while her fingers on the canvass move, Engage her tender Heart to seek thy love, With thy dear Children may she have a part, And write thy Sacred name upon her Heart.' The verse has been attributed to the hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748) and also to John Newton (1725-1807), who wrote the hymn 'Amazing Grace'. Both are said to have written it for their nieces. The bottom half of the sampler is decorated with various animals, including parrots, a lion, leopards, sheep, cockerels and a stag.
