The General Cemetery was the principal burial ground in Victorian Sheffield. Over 87,000 people were buried here between its opening in 1836 and its closure in 1978.
This painting shows a funeral procession about to make its way through the impressive cemetery gates. The cemetery was intended to be a pleasant environment in contrast to the overfilled churchyards of the city. It was built on rural land on the site of a former quarry and contained Greek Doric and Egyptian style buildings designed by Sheffield architect Samuel Worth.
