This owl is hand-painted in the colours of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. There are two stories of how the club became known as “The Owls”. One was that in 1912 an owl mascot was presented to the club by player George Robertson. After it was placed in the North stand the team won four games in a row, so the owl became a good luck symbol. The Hillsborough stadium is in the Owlerton area of Sheffield and some people believe the name came from this.
