This painting shows a view of Sheffield looking towards the centre from Heeley. It was painted when this area was still very rural in character. In the foreground is Little London Dam on the River Sheaf. The dam powered two water wheels which were used to turn grindstones for sharpening cutlery and scythes. Little London Dam was first mentioned in a lease of 1720 and was continuously in use until the mid-1900s. It was situated between Broadfield Road and Little London Road. Today this area is built up and the dam filled in.
