Albert Boler’s painting shows a rural scene of cottages at Banner Cross which contrasts vividly with the busy residential and shopping area on Ecclesall Road there today. Here the road is little more than a dirt track, with wheel ruts clearly visible.
At the time of painting, Banner Cross was a small hamlet situated to the south-west of the town of Sheffield. The area may be named after a stone cross, the remains of which stood here until the 1800s.
