This badge was awarded to Miss Beech for good attendance at school, around 1935. Gloops was a cartoon animal from the Star newspaper, and his children’s club was created in 1928. The club was run by newspaper staff, who were all known in public as “Aunt Edith”.
The Gloops club raised money for disadvantaged children, through selling Gloops’ comic, special concerts, and other activities, and by 1957 had collected over £25,000.
The badge is inlaid with blue enamel and says “Meritorious Service”, with Gloops’ catchphrase “Smile”. Gloops originally said “Thmile” instead of “Smile”, but this was changed in the 1930s so that children wouldn’t copy him.
